Relationships and Sex Education
Relationships Education and Health Education is compulsory for all pupils receiving primary school education. Sex Education is compulsory at secondary level.
High quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate teaching of these subjects helps prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. All teaching enables schools to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at school, and in society. At Beech Hill, we teach Relationships Education in the summer term while incorporating Health Education into our PSHCE lessons throughout the year.
The Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England) regulations 2019, made under section 34 and 35 of the Social Work Act 2017 states that the focus in primary schools should be on the teaching of the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and adults.
Within Relationships Education, children learn:
- the characteristics of healthy family life, the importance of family life and that some families look different and that we should respect those differences
- about caring and respectful relationships
- the rules and principles of online relationship; children learn how to recognise risks, harmful content and contact, and how to report them.
- how to be safe, including: what sort of boundaries are appropriate in friendships, about the concept of privacy, how to recognise and report feelings of being unsafe and how to get advice.
The Relationships Education that we teach follows the DFE guidelines and is carefully constructed to meet the needs of Beech Hill Primary pupils. The vocabulary that we teach is factual and scientific, ensuring our children are using accurate and safe language.
Children’s learning is showcased in our PSHCE presentation books.
